The mucilage content of structurally differing myxospermatic diaspores from 49 species belonging to 19 families ofAngiospermae has been determined by applying various extraction procedures. The results demonstrate no obvious relationship between the size, mucilage quantity, and the swelling factor of the diaspores studied. Furthermore, mucilage producing structures and structural peculiarities of the mucilages themselves are elaborated.

In a recent paper, Browne (1995) investigated the use of a pilot sample for sample size calculation. Monte Carlo simulations indicated that using a 100 · (1 — γ) per cent upper one-sided confidence limit on the population varíance σ2 leads to a sample size that guarantees the planned power with a probability of at least 1 ? γ. The purpose of this paper is to get further insight into the results of Browne by analytical considerations. Furthermore, the expected power is investigated when applying the strategy and recommendations for the choice of the pilot sample size are given.  相似文献

Several experimental models of cardiac hypertrophy were investigated in rats: 1. mild hypertrophy induced by physical exercise (18 weeks), 2. mild hypertrophy induced by renovascular hypertension (24 weeks), 3. moderate hypertrophy induced by renovascular hypertension in diabetic and non-diabetic animals (8 weeks), 4. moderate hypertrophy induced by renovascular hypertension in diabetic and non-diabetic animals (12 weeks), 5. moderate hypertrophy induced by thyroxin application (4 weeks), 6. mild hypertrophy in chronic uremia (5/6 nephrectomy, 3 weeks). It is concluded from quantitative stereological parameters of the left ventricular papillary muscles that 1. in hypertrophic hearts myocardial blood flow and oxygen consumption, respectively, rather than the size of muscle fibres determine the capillary supply of the myocardium, 2. interstitial fibrosis occurs in hypertrophy induced by chronic pressure overload and depends on degree and duration of hypertension, 3. the extent of interstitial fibrosis in hypertension is magnified by diabetes mellitus, and 4. the interstitial fibrosis which occurs in chronic uremia is not caused by hypertension.  相似文献

Mourera fluviatilis from northern South America is a spectacular member of the Podostemaceae (river-weeds). Its raceme-like inflorescences are up to 64 cm long and have 40–90 flowers arranged in two opposite rows. Inflorescence development starts with the initiation of a double-sheathed (dithecous) bract in a terminal position. All lateral bracts (again dithecous) are initiated in basipetal order along the two flanks of the inflorescence. Each gap between two neighboring bracts contains a single flower. The flowers are bisexual, each with a whorl of 16–20 ligulate tepals and 14–40 stamens, which are arranged in one or two whorls. Floral development starts with the formation of a girdling primordium rim around a two-lobed primordial gynoecium. Stamen and tepal initiation is centrifugal on the girdling primordium. The anthers are introrse or extrorse, depending on stamen position. Seedlings develop two entire, threadlike cotyledons, followed by forked filamentous leaves, which arise from the plumular pole. The radicular pole of the hypocotyl develops into a claw-shaped holdfast that fixes the young plant to the rock. The developmental morphologies of Mourera fluviatilis and other members of the Mourera group (including Lonchostephus and Tulasneantha) fit well with the Podostemoideae bauplan known from other New World genera, such as Apinagia and Marathrum.  相似文献
